UK's Finest - Air Max

The home of the Air Max is the United Kingdom, you won't be able to walk down the street without seeing a pair in some form. This is for one reason only, they're absolutely lovely!

Keywords: Nike, Air Max, Air Max 95, Air Max 1

The 1

A staple, seen everywhere today - Nike Air Max. One of, if not THE most known and loved shoe line ever created.

The Original AM1 Plans
The initial Air Max made was the 1 - Air Max 1. Funnily enough number 1 is the first model dropped, who would of thought? The first colourway to drop was the 'University Red'. Consisting of a predominantly white upper and red detailing on the Nike Swoosh. The image on the right being original drawn up plans for the shoe. Onto evolution. When originally released this shoe consisted of a thin, smooth upper which was instantly a hit with sneaker heads in this era. The shoe has bulked up over the last 30+ years. Nowadays having a wider shape, fitting into current trends. Yet, the old age sneaker heads are screaming & crying for the original style to be brought back into circulation. Also very much evolved is the price! Originally being around £60, to nowadays inflating up to around £135 - depending on retailer. A wild 2.25X increase in price, ouch, get me back to 87'. Very recently a 'retro' (firmly in air quotes) version of the 'University Red' was released. Nike attempted to retro and modernize the shoe in the one, I personally was not a fan. Decide for yourself, pic below x
AM1 Poly

This is the Air Max 1 'Poly', a present-day variation of the OG AM1. The blocky looking upper gives the shoe a robotic look - which is what puts me off personally.

When released in OCT 2024, it was stated that shipping would begin over 100 days after purchase - so consumers will have to wait till well after Christmas to receive their present. I am not sure of the reason for 100+ days before shipping. It is possible that the pairs were made to order, hopefully this large period means their quality control will be better than recent times...

Best Thing To Come Out Of 1995!

Air Max 95's

Now onto my personal favourite, the top dog, the Air Max 95. Originally coming out in the world renowned 'Neon' colourway, in unexpectedly, 1995... The models creator 'Sergio Lozano' gained his inspiration for the silhouette by the scenery outside his home (the Michael Jordan building) on the Nike campus, in Oregon. So you could say, if there's no MJ, there's no Air Max 95.

Recently we have seen a drastic increase in the price of the AM95. From the previous £110, giving the model it's 110 nickname, with pairs now fetching up to £185 per!

Over the years the Quality Control (QC) has not rose with the price, rather declined in actual fact. With Nike now pumping out pairs in the masses, the quality of each unit has been seen to decline over time.

 Collaboration's

Nike has fed into the collab era that we are currently in amongst. With the air max being a well used staple for collabs over recent years. The collab that gained the most hype being the Corteiz (CRTZ) pack. This pack (range of shoes) consisted of 3 colorways; Gutta Green, Pink Beam and Aegean Storm. I personally picked up the Gutta Green pair, now taking them on any trip & any occasion.

So, the range of air max explored was niche, only really diving into my personal favourites. Some honourable mentions include the Air Max Plus which is popping off nowadays, along with an OG favourite of mine the discontinued AM97. Currently only have the 1 pair with life in it, from my 97 era.
